HEY REST CHARACTER SKETCH..

The father of the family that hides in the annex along with the Franks and who had worked with Otto Frank as an herbal specialist in Amsterdam. Mr. van Daan’s actual name is Hermann van Pels, but Anne calls him Mr. van Daan in the diary. According to Anne, he is intelligent, opinionated, pragmatic, and somewhat egotistical. Mr. van Daan is temperamental, speaks his mind openly, and is not afraid to cause friction, especially with his wife, with whom he fights frequently and openly. He dies in the gas chambers at Auschwitz in October or November of 1944.

Mrs. Van Daan was described by one of the group of Dutch "protectors" as "a very uncomplicated person, anxious and cheerful at the same time, as temperamental people often are." Anne's account of her in her diary is generally unflattering and intolerant, and we often feel that there was a great gulf of character and intelligence between them. What is evident is that Mrs. Van Daan was not a stoical person who shines in adversity.
Mrs. Van Daan was included in the last group of one thousand prisoners sent from Westerbork in Holland to Auschwitz in Poland on September 2, 1944, as the Nazis retreated before the advancing Allies. At Auschwitz, she was separated from her husband and son. She was sent to Belsen, separately from Anne and Margot, who were surprised to meet her there later on. It was she who heard Anne's friend, Lies, calling from another part of the camp, and who summoned Anne to their meeting.
Mrs. Van Daan died at Belsen, although it is not known whether she was gassed or succumbed to hunger or disease. The date of her death is not known, although it must have been after February, when Anne and Lies saw one another for the last time.

Anne's first impression of Peter was not particularly kind, ''a shy, awkward boy going on sixteen, whose company won't amount to much.'' The situation must have been strange to have been thrust into a small space with a family they didn't really know, which must have indeed made things awkward for a time.
Peter spends most of their beginning months laying in his own sectioned off space napping and avoiding the Franks and his own parents. Peter does occasionally get up to help with random carpentry work around the Annex. Anne originally calls Peter over-sensitive and a hypochondriac because he constantly complains about weird bodily functions, aches, and pains. Peter slowly comes out of his shell as the sheer boredom of being in hiding is too much to allow being a recluse for very long. Additionally, Peter decides to be friends with Anne and Margot to escape his parents arguing.
