Check dams as the name itself suggests , is the structure constructed across any river or stream to stop its flow.Stop dams are very small structures generally of 1 or 2 m height having limited storage,utility and purpose.
Conventional dams are huge structures having height 5 m to even 200 m and having multiple use like power generation, drinking water,irrigation,navigation,flood control or even tourism.
A check dam may cost Rs 50 Lakhs or so whereas a conventional dam may be of Rs 1000 crores or even more depending upon its size.
