x-y = 20.........1

also , x + y = 36.........2

adding equation 1 & 2

we get,

(x+y) + (x-y ) = 36+20

=> 2x = 56

=> x = 56/2

=> x = 28 years

putting value of x in equation 2

we get,

(28) + y = 36

=> y = 36-28

=> y = 8 years
