Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the present age of the elder be x yrs

Then age of younger is (x-6)yrs

12 yrs ago

Age of elder would be (x-12)yrs

And age of younger would be (x-6-12)=(x-18)yrs

Now according to question

3(x-12)=x-18

3x-36=x-18

3x-x=36-18

2x=18

i.e.x=9

Therefore present age of elder is 9 yrs

And present age of older is 9-6=3yrs

Answer :

The present ages of younger one and elder one are 14 years and 30 years respectively.

Explanation :

Given : Ages of two persons differ by 6 years. 12 years ago the elder one will be three times as older as the younger one.

To find : Present ages of them.

Soultion :

Let the age of elder one be x years

Let the age of the younger one be y years

Difference of age between them = 6 years

=> x - y = 6

x = 6 + y ------- eq(1)

12 years ago:

The age of elder one = (x - 12) years

The age of younger one = (y - 12) years

According to the question:

(x - 12) = 3(y - 12)

6 + y - 12 = 3(y - 12)

-6 + y = 3y - 36

3y - y = 36 - 6

2y = 30

y = 30/2

y = 15

Subtitute y = 15 in eq(1)

x = 6 + 15

x = 21

So the present ages of younger one and elder one are 15 years and 21 years respectively.
