Answer:-
Let the first number be a and second number be b.
Given:
Difference between the numbers = 5
→ a - b = 5 -- equation (1)
Difference between their squares = 65
→ a² - b² = 65
Using a² - b² = (a + b)(a - b) we get,
→ (a + b)(a - b) = 65
Substitute values from equation (1).
→ a + b = 65/5
→ a + b = 13 -- equation (2)
Add equations (1) & (2).
→ a - b + a + b = 5 + 13
→ 2a = 18
→ a = 18/2
→ a = 9
Substitute the value of a in equation (1).
→ 9 - b = 5
→ 9 - 5 = b
→ 4 = b
Hence, the larger number of the two numbers is 9.
