Answer:

y = -2 or 6

x = 1 or 9

Step-by-step explanation:

let the numbers be x and y. (x > y)

Given

x - y = 3 ------- eq 1

y² = 4x ------ eq 2

Solution

From eq 1 :

x = 3 + y -------- eq 3

Substituting eq 3 in eq 2

y² = 4(3 + y)

y² = 12 + 4y

y² - 4y - 12 = 0

y² - 6y + 2y - 12 = 0

y(y - 6) + 2(y - 6) = 0

(y + 2)(y - 6) = 0

y = -2 or 6

y = -2 or 6x = 1 or 9
