Given :

  • difference between two numbers is 4

  • Four times the larger number is six times the smaller

To Find :

  • The smaller number

  • The larger number

Solution :

Let, the larger no. be x and smaller no. be y

x - y = 4

⇒ x = 4 + y

________________________________

4x = 6y

⇒ 4 ( 4 + y ) = 6y

⇒ 16 + 4y = 6y

⇒ 16 = 6y - 4y

⇒ 16 = 2y

⇒ 16/2 = y

⇒ 8 = y

Therefore, smaller no. is 8

________________________________

x = 4 + y

⇒ x = 4 + 8

⇒ x = 12

Therefore, greater no. is 12

The larger number is 12.

The smaller number is 8.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let x be the larger number.

Let y be the smaller number.

x-y=4--(1)

4x=6y

4x-6y=0--(2)

(1)*4=4x-4y=16--(3)

(3)-(2)

(4x-4y=16)-(4x+6y=0)

2y=16

y=16/2

y=8

x-y=4

x-8=4

x=8+4

x=12

Check:4*12-6*8=0

48-48=0

0=0
