Answer:

Let the bigger number be x and the smaller number be y.

Accordingto the question,

x-y=8............(i)

Again,

x+2=3y

=>x-3y=-2......(ii)

Now subtracting (i) from (ii),

We get,

x-3y-x+y=-2-8

-2y=-10

y=5

Putting value of y in (i) we get

x-y=8

=>x-5=8

=>x=13

Given :

  • The difference between two numbers is 8 if 2 added to the bigger number the result will be three times the smaller number .

To Find :

  • We have to find the required numbers.

Solution :

Let the bigger number be m and smaller number be n.

It is given in the question that,the difference between two numbers is 8 , mathematically it can be expressed as :

  • m - n = 8 .......[Equation (i)]

In question it is also given that,if 2 added to the bigger number the result will be three times the smaller number , mathematically it can be expressed as :

  • m + 2 = 3n .......[Equation (ii)]

From equation (ii) we get :

  • m = 3n - 2 .......[Equation (iii)]

Now, substitute the equation (iii) in equation (i) :

→ 3n - 2 - n = 8

→ 2n - 2 = 8

→ 2n = 8 + 2

→ 2n = 10

→ n = 10 ÷ 2

n = 5

By putting the value of n = 5 in equation (iii) we get :

→ m = 3 × 5 - 2

→ m = 15 - 2

m = 13

Hence,the required numbers are :

  • Bigger number = m = 13
  • Smaller number = n = 5
