let the biggest number be x
and let the smaller number be y.
Then
x-y=8-------------------------------1
x+2=3y------------------------------2
by subsituition method
x=8+y [from 1]------------------3
putting the value of 1 in 2
8+y+2=3y
10=3y-y
10=2y
y=10/2=5
putting the value of y in 3
x=5+4
x=13.
and let the smaller number be y.
Then
x-y=8-------------------------------1
x+2=3y------------------------------2
by subsituition method
x=8+y [from 1]------------------3

given - x - y = 8
x + 2 = 3y
To find - x and y
Solution -
we are assuming the greater number as x
and smaller number as y.
x - y = 8
or,x = 8 + y. (equation 1)
x + 2 = 3y.
or, x = 3y - 2 ( equation 2)
now putting the value of x from equation 1 in equation 2,
8 + y = 3y - 2
or, 8 + 2 = 3y -y
or, 10 = 2y
or, 10/2 = y
or, 5 = y.
now putting the value of y in equation 1 ,
x = 8 + 5
or, x = 13.
∴ x = 13 and y = 5.
hence, the value of the unknown number is found,
