$x - y = 4$

$x = 4 + y$

$x ^{2} - y ^{2} = 56$

$(4 + y)^{2} - y ^{2} = 56$

$16 + y ^{2} + 2 \times 4 \times y - y {}^{2} = 56$

$16 + 8y = 56$

$8y = 56 - 16$

$8y = 40$

$y = 40 \div 8$

$y = 5$

$x = 4 + x$

$x = 4 + 5$

$x = 9$
