let the two numbers be x and y

given difference between them is 40

so , x-y=40 ———eq(1)

also,given ratio between them is 5:3

so, x/y = 5/3

hence,we get 3x=5y———-eq(2)

now,solve eq(1) and eq(2)

(5y/3)-y=40

2y/3 = 40

2y = 120

y = 60

therefore x = 40+60 = 100

Hence the numbers are 60 and 100
