The difference in the readings of a Fahrenheit and a Celsius thermometer is 48 degrees. What are the actual readings shown in the thermometers?

Let the reading in the Fahrenheit scale be F

and the reading in the Celsius scale be C

F-C=48

or, F= C+48

We know by formula,

C/5= F-32/9

or, C/5= C+48-32/9

or, C/5= C+16/9

or, 9C =5(C+16)

or, 9C= 5C+80

or, 9C-5C=80

or, 4C= 80

C= 80/4

∴ C= 20

∴ F=C+48

     =20+48

      = 68

∴ The reading in the Fahrenheit  scale is 68 degree Fahrenheit  and the reading in the Celsius is 20 degree Celsius
