To find:

Solution:

40=2×2×2×5

240=2×2×2×2×3×5

480=2×2×2×2×2×3×5

HCF of all three numbers:

HCF=2×2×2×5=40

LCM of all the three numbers:

LCM=2×2×2×2×2×3×5=480

So, the difference between the HCF and LCM of these numbers is

LCM-HCF=480-40=440

Now, let the required number be x.

So,

2x=440

x=220

Hence, the required number is 220.
