Step-by-step explanation:

Let the numbers be x(larger) and y(smaller)

GT-

x^2-y^2=88

x=2y-5

applying

a ^{2}  - b ^{2}  = (a + b)(a - b)

we get

x^2-y^2=(x+y)(x-y)

substituting x=2y-5 in the above equation we get

(2y-5+y)(2y-5-y)=88

(3y-5)(y-5)=88

3y^2-15y-5y+25=88

3y^2-20y-63=0

3y^2-27y+7y-63=0

3y(y-9)+7(y-9)=0

(y-9)(3y+7)=0

y=9;y=-7/3

The numbers when

y=9;x=13

y=-7/3;x=-29/3
