The differences between the Nawabs of Bengal and the Company intensified during the early 18 Th century. After the death of Aurangzeb, the Nawabs of Bengal who succeeded him began to establish control. They were against the Company acquiring territories and expanding its trade in Bengal. They felt that Bengal was being deprived of a huge amount of revenue. They demanded huge tributes form the Company for continuing trade and prevented it from minting coins and extending its fortifications. The Company felt that the demands of the local rulers were unjust and hampered its trade. It believed that its trade could flourish if the duties were removed. According to the Company, the trade could only be expanded by enlarging settlements, acquiring more villages and rebuilding forts. All these conflicts between the Nawabs and the Company eventually resulted in the famous Battle of Plassey, which marked the beginning of Company rule in India.
