Fancy serial numbers are “special” serial numbers. Common named include cool serials, fancy serials, rare serials, and even collectible serial numbers. Personally, I prefer to call them fancy serials. There are many pedigrees of serial numbers, which is the term that the Paper Money Guarantee (a grading company that I will call PMG from now on) has labeled them. There are multiple different pedigrees of fancy serials – from Radars, solid digits, low serial numbers (0000 1000 and lower), high serial numbers (9999 0000 and higher) etc. This article will describe the different kinds of fancy serial numbers and serve as a type of field guide for the collector that is just learning. For each pedigree is also a quick definition and background in this guide.

Serial Number 1 through 9

Very simply these are the lowest of the low serials, and are the first numbers printed in any run. PMG will label these notes on the holder as “Serial Number 1” etc. These notes are exceedingly rare, and worth a very good premium.

Low Serial Number

The general definitions are numbers that are below serial 0000 9999; and are a “collectible” serial. However, most people do not collect notes above serial number 0000 1000. PMG will only give the pedigree in the above-mentioned Serials 1 through 9.

High Serial Number

The definition of a high serial number is a note that has a number of 9999 0000 or higher. These are the last notes printed in any run of notes, and are less often talked about because modern runs never reach that amount. You will most likely find these high serial numbers on silver certificates or older notes.

Binary Serial Number

A “binary” serial number is a serial number comprised of any two digits, for example, 1212 2212 is a binary serial number. PMG will only give the pedigree to what any notaphilist will call a “true” binary. A true binary note has a serial that is only comprised of 1s and 0s. For example 0101 1100 is a “true” binary, and PMG would label this note as a Binary Serial Number.

Million Serial Number

This is a serial number that reads as a variable of a million. For example, 72 million as a serial number would be 7200 0000. A Million Serial number is quite uncommon, and is any number followed by six zeros on a note. The number 1 million on a serial would be 0100 0000. These notes vary in value.
