let \: the \: numerator \: be = x = x + 17 \\ let \: the \: denominator \: be \:  = x = x + 7 - 6 = x + 1 \\ fraction \: become =  \frac{x + 17}{x + 1}  \\  \frac{x + 17}{x + 1}  = 2 \\  \frac{x + 17}{x + 1}  \times  \frac{2}{1}  \\ 1(x + 17) = 2(x + 1) \\ x + 17 = 2x + 2 \\ x - 2x = 2 - 17 \\  - x =  - 15 \\ x = 15(negative \: sign \: cancelled \:</strong> by \: each \: other) \\
