The disadvantage of the hardwired approach is that the instruction set and the control logic are directly tied together by special circuits. These circuits are complex and it is difficult to design or modify them. If a person designs a hardwired computer and later wants to extend the instruction set he has to change the physical components in the computer. This is very expensive because new chips have to be fabricated and the old ones have to be located and replaced.
