The discovery of the principle of oscillation made it easier to measure time accurately.

According to this principle, a repetitive measure moves along the same central area. This measure can be anything but it gives a basic measurable value that is accurate due to the equal intervals of its movement.  

The examples can be the movement of sand through a glass containers or even atomic clocks can fulfil the principle.
