Question :- The discriminant of the quadratic equation ax²

– px + c² = 0, where a, b, c ∈ R and a ≠ 0, is

(1) ac²– 4p

(2) p² + ac²

(3) 4p² – 4ac²

(4) p² – 4ac² .

Solution :-

As we know that, the expression (b² - 4ac) is called the discriminant of the quadratic equation ax² + bx + c = 0. (a ≠ 0) .

So, Comparing the given quadratic equation ax²– px + c² = 0, with ax² + bx + c = 0 , we get :-

  • a = a
  • b = (-p)
  • c = c²

Putting all values in the discriminant expression now, we get,

→ D = b² - 4ac

→ D = (-p)² - 4 * a * c²

→ D = (p² - 4ac²) .(Option 4) (Ans.)
