Distance is a scalar quantity .

So only its magnitude is taken.

Distance is zero in below cases-----

For a static object ,the distance traveled is zero.

The distance from a point to the same point is zero.

The relative distance according to the observer traveling with same speed is also zero.
______________
---------------

But distance can't be negative.

Even if taken in negative or opposite side only its magnitude is considered.

Let an object travels along the sides of a triangle ABC.

It starts from Point A and goes to B then C then A .

Now its displacement is the minimum distance between its final and initial position.
That is zero this time.

But its distance traveled is the perimeter of the triangle ABC.
