Two parallel chords PQ and MN are 3 cm apart
on the same side of a circle where PQ = 7 cm
and MN = 14 cm. Calculate the radius of the circle

Answer:

If O is the centre, OP,OQ, OM and ON are all radii.

If distance of PQ from centre is x and  

distance of MN from centre is y  

Since a perpendicular dropped from centre to any chord bisects the chord,

By applying Pythgoras therom,

R^2-x^2=(PQ/2)^2= 3.5^2=12.25

R^2 –y^2= (MN/2)^2= 7^2=49

And x-y= 3;

y=x-3

R^2-x^2=12.25

R^2 –(x-3)^2= R^2- x^2 +6x -9=49

6x=58-12.25=45.75

x= 7.625

R^2-x^2=12.25

R^2= 7.625^2+12.25=70.39

R=√70.39
