Given  :  x = 4 and x = -2

To Find : distance between the graph of the equations x = 4 and x = -2

Solution:

x = -2    any point on line x = - 2 can be represented as

( - 2 , y₁)

Distance of point (x₁ , y₁ )  from line  Ax  + By + C = 0     is given by :

|  (Ax₁ + By₁  + C) / (√(A² + B²)

x = 4  can be written as     1.x  + 0.y  - 4  = 0

A = 1 ,  B = 0 , C = - 4

(x₁ , y₁ )  = ( - 2 , y₁)

Distance  =  |  (1(-2) + 0(y₁)  + (-4)) / (√(1² + 0²)

= |   (-2  + 0 - 4) / 1 |

= | - 6 |

=  6

Hence distance between the graph of the equations x = 4 and x = -2  is  6 units

Same can be done by taking a point on x = 4

as ( 4 , y₁)  and finding distance from x = - 2

Distance  =  |  (1(4) + 0(y₁)  +2) / (√(1² + 0²)

= |   (4  + 0 +2) / 1 |

= 6    units
