Object has moved 2 m  and towards plane mirror if distance between the object and its image on plane mirror is changed from 12 m to 8 m.

Given : The distance between the object and its image on plane mirror is 12m.

The new distance between the same object and its image on plane mirror is 8m.

To Find :  the distance by how much the object has been moved and in which direction.

Solution:

Assume that plane mirror is at origin

and Object is on +ve  x axis then Image will be at - ve x axis

Let say Originally object at    a ,

then image is at  - a

Distance = a -(-a) = 2a

=> 2a = 12 m

=> a = 6 m

Hence object is 6 m from  plane mirror

Now object shifted to b

then image is at  - b

Distance =b -(-b) = 2b

=> 2b =  8 m

=> b = 4 m

Hence object is 4 m from  plane mirror

Originally object was 6 m from plane mirror

and shifter to 4 m from  plane mirror

hence Object has shifted 2 m  toward plane mirror

Object has moved 2 m  and towards plane mirror
