from the attached figure

in ∆ABC, AB = 8m , AC = 17 m

by Pythagoras theorem,

AB^2 + BC^2 = AC^2

BC =  \sqrt{AC^2 - AB^2}

\sqrt{ {17}^{2} - {8}^{2} } = \sqrt{289 - 64} = \sqrt{225} = 15

BC = 15 m

since DE is the distance between two poles

DE = BC = 15 m
