Let AB=8 cm is the chord of the circle with radius 5 cm

Draw OP⊥AB and join BO

PB=21AB=21×8=4cm

∴OB2=PB2+OP2

⇒OP2=OB2−PB2

⇒OP=52−42

⇒OP=25−16⇒9=3cm.
