The distance between two station was
measured with a 20m chain and found to be
1500 metres. The same was measured with a
3om chain and found to be 1476 meters
If the 20m chain was 5cm too short, what
was the error in the 30 metre chain

Answer:

Error in 30 m chain is = 41.16 cm.

Explanation:

  • Step 1:  20 m = 1 chain

                   1500 m = 1 × 1500/20 = 75 chains.

  • Step 2:  1 chain has a shortage of 5 cm = 0.05m

                      75 chains has shortage of 0.05 × 75 = 3.75 m.

  • Step 3:  Actual distance = 1500 - 3.75 = 1496.25 m.
  • Step 4:  By 30 m chain the distance = 1476 m.

                      Differ from the actual distance by (1496.25 - 1476) = 20.25m

  • Step 5:  In 1476 m the error is = 20.25m

                      In 30 m the error = 20.25 × 30/1476 m

                                                   = 0.41156m = 41.16 cm

The error in 30 metre chain is 41.16 cm.
