The distance between two stations a and b is 500km. Two trains start from stations, at the same time on parallel tracks to cross each other. The speed of one train is 20km/h less than that of the other train. After three and a quarter hours, the trains are 45km apart. Find the speed of each train.

Answer:

Let the required distance be x km.

Then, ( x/80 ) - ( 220 - x ) / 100 = 1/2

⇒ 5x - 4( 220 - x ) = 200

⇒ 9x = 1080

⇒ x = 120 km

∴ Required distance = 120 km
