A body is falling from a certain height.

initial velocity of body , u = 0

Let distance covered by the body in first second is S.

now, S = ut + 1/2 at² [ from formula ]

here, t = 1, u = 0, a = g

so, S = 1/2 × g × 1² = g/2 ......(1)

for finding distance covered by the body in 3rd second, use the formula

S' = u + 1/2 a(2n - 1)

where , u = 0, a = g and n = 3

so, S' = 1/2 g(2 × 3 - 1) = 5g/2 ......(2)

from equations (1) and (2),

S/S' = 1/5

hence required answer is 1 : 5
