if a person travels some distance and come back to its initial position, then it has cover some distance but the displacement is zero at that time.

For example when an object is thrown in upward direction upto a height h it comes back downwards due to the gravitaional force but through the same path travelling distance h
Hence the total distance travelled is h+h=2h
But the displacement is zero as the initial and the final position of the object is same
Remember that displacement is zero only when initial and final position are the same
Another example is a body moving in circular motion
