Answer: It indicates that it is an alkene (unsaturated compound).

But the actual meaning of a double bond is that two electrons of each carbon atom are covalently bonded with  each other. Single bond indicates a single covalent bond , a double bond indicates a double covalent bond and a triple bond indicates a triple covalent bond.
