Humans have a pair of lung, each of which is covered by a double membrane called pleura, with pleural fluid between them. Pleural fluid reduces the friction on the lung surface.

The double layered proctective membrane of the lungs that help to prevent the friction between lungs and walls of the thoracic cavity is called PLEURA.

PLEURA:

  • PLEURA is a double layered covering around the lungs.

  • The outer layer of pleura is called parietal pleura.

  • The inner layer of pleura surrounding the lungs is called visceral pleura.

  • The space between the two layers is filled with pleural fluid , which reduces the friction.

  • The regions of pleura are cervical pleura, costomediastenal pleura, costodiaphragmatic pleura, posterior pleura , costo pleura and mediastenal pleura.

  • The pleura is invaginated in the left lung near to the cardiac notch between 4th and 6th rib.

  • In the region of cardiac notch, the pericardium of heart is surrounded only by pleural membrane.

  • The costodiaphragmatic recess is the 4 to 5 cm deep space between parietal and visceral pleura in the distal region of thorax.
