Block mountain

Block mountains are formed when huge blocks or segments of the earth are broken and relocated vertically.

The uplifted segments are defined as horsts and the lower segments are termed graben. The Great African Rift Valley whose hollow platform is graben and the Vosges mountain in Europe are instances of the block mountain.

Block mountains are also described as fault block mountains because they are created due to faulting as a consequence of compressible forces.
