  • Drain Theory is the theory that proposed that poverty in India was a result of the colonial rule that was draining the revenue and wealth of India.
  • Dadabhai Naoroj was an Indian businessman, scholar, and activist moreover the first Asian member of parliament in the British House of Commons.
  • Dadabhai Naoroji was the initial man to explain that internal factors were not the explanation for poverty in India. He said that poverty was the result of colonial rule that was draining the prosperity and wealth of India.
  • In the year 1867, Dadabhai Naoroji put forward the ‘Drain Of Wealth’ theory in which he asserted that Britain was entirely draining India.
  • He spoke of this theory in his book Poverty and Un-British Rule in India. He introduce the notion that Britain was draining and seeping India and that, also, for nothing.
  • He opposed the then-traditional economic theory that as economies struggled on the purpose of “natural laws”, the prosperity and poverty of nations were beyond human effort.
