The drama ' the dear departed' brings to our notice the ugly and materialistic nature of people and their callous attitude towards their elderly parents . along with it, we get a chance to realise that the elderly can be plucky and sharp too , and can rebuff the selfish assaults on their children. discuss with references from the drama.

The Dear Departed means somebody who is very dear has passed away. It talks about death of grandfather. The scenario on expects is a sad and grieved one. But what one sees and witnesses in the course of the play is something very unusual. The two sisters Amelia and Elizabeth are shown as very selfish, greedy and opportunists. They fake their sorrow and are projected as hypocrisy. They only want to express their feelings by wearing the mourning black but here also the two sisters show their jealousy for each other by their expensive dresses. It is quite ironical that the departed one is not at all dear to anyone except the little granddaughter who loves her grandfather. He is a burden and no one is ready to put up with him. The two sister demarcate the period when father would be with them. It is never a day more or less. On the said day he is shifted. It is quite ironical that for Mrs. Slater, Elizabeth and Ben 'mourning' means only 'getting into' their 'blacks''. They have no sincere or genuine feelings for 'The Dear Departed' Ben ironically "It might have been one of us"

I hope it will be helpfull
