Indirect/Reported Speech refers to a dialogue being said to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person.
Example: She said,"I am going for the school picnic." (Direct)
She said that she was going for the school picnic. (Indirect)
In the above example, when writing in indirect/reported form, the sentence changes according to its tense. Also, modifications regarding certain words like 'this' changes to 'that', 'will' changes to 'would', 'can' changes to 'could', 'may' changes to 'might' and many other words will have to be made.
The driver said,"The bridge has collapsed." (Direct)
The driver said that the bridge had collapsed. (Indirect)
Hope it helps :)
