The word Haryana is basically found in the works of Vibudh Shridhar, the 12th century AD Apabhramsha.

The word is literally derived from the Sanskrit word named ‘Hari’ meaning Vishnu and ‘Ayana’ standing for home.

Haryana occurs in Chahamana inscription describing Arno raja carrying arms into Haritanaka which is the ancient name of Haryana.

Explanation:

  • Even in the mythological books called skandapurana this name is mentioned.
  • Haryana is the place surrounded by greenery and vegetation and hence it is also called Bahudhanyaka in the epic called Mahabharata.
  • It is also called with various other names in the ancient scripture.
  • This name is used in the inscription kept in Delhi Museum which opines that Haryana is called to be the paradise in the soil.
