The earliest reference of the word ‘Haryana’ is found in writings by Vibhudh Sridhar, written in Apabhramsha language, during the 1100 CE. It is a combination of two words - ‘Hari’ meaning God Vishnu and ‘Ayana’ meaning abode or home.

The state of Haryana was established in 1966, based on cultural and linguistic differences. It was formerly part of East Punjab. Chandigarh is its capital.
