The earth and the moon are attracted to each other by gravitational
force. Does the earth attract the moon with a force that is greater or
smaller or the same as the force with which the moon attracts the earth?
Why?

Answer:

Earth attracts moon with greater gravitational force, than moon attracting earth. It is because gravity increases with mass. That's why sun has more gravitational force compared to earth.

Answer:

The earth attracts the moon with a force that is greater than the force with which the moon attracts the earth.

Explanation:

From the universal law of gravitation, the force of attraction between two objects is given by,

                                F = GMm / d²

F is the force of attraction, G is the universal gravitational constant, M and m are the masses of different objects (here the mass of earth and moon respectively) separated by a distance d.

We have, F = ma

Replacing F with ma in the above equation, we get,

    ma = GMm / d²

⇒ mg = GMm /d²               (∵ a = g)

  ∴  g = GM /d²

g is the force of gravity that depends on the mass of the earth or moon. Since the mass of the earth is greater than that of the moon, the earth can attract the moon with a greater force.
