the space between Earth and the Sun is empty, so there’s nothing there to light up. If you’re lucky, the Moon, Venus or Mercury are roughly between the Sun and the Earth, and you can see them.

However, if Venus or Mercury is exactly between the Sun and the Earth, you can’t see them, because of the Sun’s glare. With the right equipment, you can see them as a small black spot against the sun disc – the Sun lights up the other side, but not this side.

If the Moon is exactly between the Sun and the Earth (specifically, where you are), you get a solar eclipse. If it’s almost exactly between the Sun and the Earth, the Sun lights up the other side of the Moon and this side of the Moon is dark.

And that’s basically what is between the Earth and the Sun. There’s nothing else to light up, and they’re just small specks on the sky anyway.
