Let the number be x

8th part of x = \dfrac{x}{8}

9th part of x = \dfrac{x}{9}

The eighth part of a number exceeds the ninth part by 5 i.e. the sum of the number = 5

According to the question,

\dfrac{x}{8} - \dfrac{x}{9} = 5

By multiplying 8 and 9,

\dfrac{x}{72} = 5

Multiplying 72 by 5

x = 5 × 72

x = 360

∴ The number is 360

Verification :-

\dfrac{x}{8} - \dfrac{x}{9} = 5

\dfrac{360}{8} - \dfrac{360}{9} = 5

➾ 45 - 40 = 5

➾ 5 = 5

LHS = RHS ✔✔
