The elder of two brothers is 4 years older than the younger . If he is also 3 times as old as the younger, find their ages

Let the age of the younger person be x years.

Then, the age of the elder person = (x+16) years.

Six years ago, their ages were x−6 and x+16−6=x+10 years.

According to the given condition, we have

∴3(x−6)=(x+16−6)

∴x=14

So, their present ages are 14 years and 30 years.

Hence, sum of their present ages =44 years.

Age of elder brother = 3 times the age of younger brother

x = 3(x - 4)

x = 3x - 12

2x - 12 = 0
