Then, I worked some trial & error of small-ish numbers in my head to find an integer plus its square equaling 30 and found 5 and 25. Add 4 years and you get 9 and 29, which satisfies the problem statement.

(If you write the “4-years-ago” condition as a quadratic equation, you'll also find the solution that -6 and 36 also works, but creates a not-sensible answer. The end answer to this one would end up being, “one brother is 40 years old, and the other will be born in 2 years.” i.e. the younger brother’s age is -2, which arguably works mathematically, but is not a sensible way that we think of ages!)
