The electric field Ē at each point on a rectangular surface has a magnitude of 350 N/C and makes an angle of 50° with the normal to the surface n. The dimensions of the surface are 20 cm by 15 cm. Calculate the electric flux for the surface.

Answer:

Explanation:

             A   B

Fig. 1.11 Boundary condition for E between two dielectric media

Let Et1 and Et2 be the tangential components of E in the media 1 and 2 respectively as shown in Fig. 1.11. Then,

dl                  (1.22)

ABCDA

where l = AB = CD.

Using Eq. 1.21 in Eq. 1.22 we get

Et1 = Et2               (1.23) Eq. 1.23 states that the tangential component of the electric field is continuous along the boundary. Note that to calculate work done, we need force, which is related to the electric field.

The boundary condition contained in Eq. (1.23) may be written in the vector form as

n×E1 = n×E2
