Given info : The electrical energy used to pump the water up to the mountain lake is 1.2 x 10^12 J. Only 6.2 x 10^11 J of electrical energy is generated when the water is released.

To find : The efficiency of this energy storage scheme is ...

solution : we know, efficiency is given by, η = W/Q

where W is workdone and Q is energy of source.

here Q = 1.2 × 10¹² J and W = 6.2 × 10¹¹ J

now η = 6.2 × 10¹¹/1.2 × 10¹²

= 6.2/12

≈ 0.517

in percentage = η × 100 = 51.7 %

Therefore the efficiency of energy storage scheme is 51.7 % (approx ).
