Sodium has 11 protons & if it is neutral than it also has 11 electrons.

since the electronic configration is 2,8,1

which means that atomic number of element is (2+8+1) = 11

and we know that atomic number of sodium is 11 and hence the electronic configuration is 2,8,1 is of Na

we can see that sodium has one electron more than stable electronic configurations hence it loses 1 electron to become positively charged ion and hence sodium is a metal
