The electronic configuration of element X is 2,8,8,1
and the electronic configuration of element Y is 2,8,
7. Then the type of bond formed between these two
elements is ionic bond. why it can't be covalent bond as sharing of 1 electron occurs

Answer:

Explanation:

it cannot be a covalent bond because X is a alkali metal which has a strong tendency to lose electron to attain stable octet configuration so on losing electron it will become as 2, 8,8 (stable)

similarly Y is a halogen which is most electronegative in nature and it has a tendency to receive electron to attain stability (octet) while on recieving that lost electron its configuration will become as 2,8,8 (stable)

This is the main reason why bond formed between them is ionic and not covalent

Hope it helps you............
