For the formation of Nitrogen molecule, 1 atom of nitrogen needs 3 electrons, therefore 3 electrons will participate in sharing of electrons to form N 2 ,i.e., Nitrogen molecule.

Therefore 2 electrons of the outermost shell will not involve in the making of Nitrogen molecule.
