The two elements that will combine to form an ionic compound are : X - 2 8 2 & Y - 2 8 6.

Let us have a look at the valencies of the elements given here.

Valency of X = 2

Valency of Y = -2

Valency of Z = 1

Element X has 2 electrons in its outer shell while element Z has 1 electron in its outer shell. So, both these elements will lose these electrons to attain the octet and attain a positive charge.

Element Y has 6 electrons in its outermost shell, hence it will gain 2 electrons in order to complete its octet and will attain a negative charge.

Ions will be formed as-

Element X - X^{+2}

Element Y - Y^{-2}

Element Z - Z^{+}

Thus, X^{+2} and Y^{-2} will combine to form an ionic compound.
