Explanation:
Chlorophyll is a compound known as a chelate. Chelates consist of central metal ions bonded to big organic molecules that are composed of hydrogen, carbon, or other elements. Chlorophyll can occur in a variety of forms and is the pigment that gives plants their green color.

Magnesium is a constituent of chlorophyll and gives green colour to the leaf of plant.
Explanation:
- Chlorophylls contain a magnesium ion in the middle of the porphyrin ring. The electronic transitions (i.e. electron raised transiently to a higher energy orbital with energy of a photon of suitable energy) that give raise to the visible-light absorption of the chlorophylls, and thereby to their colors, are located in a so called conjugate structure of the porphyrin ring.
- Conjugate is a chemical sequence of carbon atoms in which every second bond is a single bond, every second is a double bond, and long conjugates absorb visible light. You can see the conjugate easily in the ring structure. The tail does not affect light absorption.
- The Mg ion is not fully without effect on the absorption properties of the chlorophylls. This can be seen by comparing the absorption spectra of e.g. chlorophyll a and phaeophytin a (chlorophyll a without the magnesium).
- The red absorbance peak is almost identical in both compounds but the blue peak of phaeophytin a is at ~30 nm shorter wavelength than that of chlorophyll a. Furthermore, the blue absorption band of phaeophytin a absorbs light more efficiently than the blue absorption band of chlorophyll a.
- Plants are not green because of the magnesium. But they would probably have a different tint of green if they contained phaeophytins instead of chlorophylls.
